AT A GLANCE

Which option suits your group?

After-work pub plans: Darlo starts at 5pm on Mondays; The Courty starts at 6pm.
A bigger library: Fortress lists party, family and strategy games with player counts.
Coming on your own: Fortress’s free Wednesday social has hosts to help you join a group.

Darlo and The Courty do not publish a board-game fee or game inventory in their checked programmes. Fortress’s Wednesday social is free, but that does not make everyday tavern hire free. Confirm the price and a suitable table for your visit.

A closer look before you go

Darlo Bar — Darlinghurst

At 306 Liverpool Street, Darlo’s Monday programme pairs board games with its Drumsticks & Dice night from 5pm. Choose it when your group wants a pub catch-up with a game on the table. The venue confirms that games are part of the night, but does not name the titles or a borrowing charge.

Ask the bar which boxes are available and whether the same collection can be used outside Monday’s advertised session.

The Courty — Newtown

The Courthouse Hotel at 202 Australia Street advertises classic board games during Games Night every Monday from 6pm. It is an Inner West option for friends meeting after work. The programme does not publish named titles or a board-game charge, so check both before planning around a particular game.

This is the Newtown Courthouse, rather than the similarly named hotel in Darlinghurst. Tell staff you are coming for tabletop games and ask for enough table space for your group.

Fortress Tavern — Chippendale

Fortress Sydney is at Level 2, Central Park Mall, 28 Broadway. Its tavern offers a board-game library every day. Use the Sydney selector in the official library to choose a title and check player numbers; individual boxes may already be borrowed.

The venue also advertises a free Wednesday evening Board Game Social. Its linked Sydney dates show 6–10pm, and the event is 18+. Check the current session details separately from everyday tavern hire, whose price is not stated on the checked library page.

BEFORE YOU GO

Make room for a good game

Explore Sydney venues by suburb and select Map to see locations. That search includes other venues; check the Board Games category for the verified NightScanner profiles.

A quick game needs less space and commitment than a long strategy session. Before booking, tell the venue your group size, preferred game and likely playing time. Ask whether the table will be needed for dining or another event.

Checked 13 October 2026: game collections, fees and programme times can change. Food and drinks are separate from any stated game cost. Confirm the date, age conditions and access with the venue.

This shortlist covers pubs and a licensed tavern that advertise board games for customers. It focuses on playing around a table with food or drinks. We have kept titles and prices unspecified where the venues do not publish them.

If a particular game matters, ask whether the box is available and complete. For a long game, choose a time when your group can settle in without having to move halfway through.

QUICK ANSWERS

Board-game pub FAQs

Which Sydney pubs provide board games?

Darlo Bar advertises board games on Mondays from 5pm, and The Courty in Newtown advertises classic board games on Mondays from 6pm. Fortress’s Chippendale tavern has an everyday library. Confirm access outside advertised sessions with each venue.

Are pub board games free?

Fortress advertises its Wednesday Board Game Social as free. Darlo and The Courty do not state a board-game fee in their checked programmes. Ask before assuming borrowing is free; everyday Fortress hire and group packages are separate from the social event.

Can I bring my own board game?

Fortress explicitly welcomes visitors’ own games in the tavern. Ask Darlo or The Courty before bringing a box, particularly for a large board or a long session. A pub table booking does not automatically include permission to occupy it for several hours.
